St. Patrick’s Memorial Flags
Posted by: Janice Meyers Foreman
Twice now I have had the pleasure of being in New York City and witnessing the St. Patrick’s Parade. I have to say that St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year, and to be able to celebrate in New York City was special; to have had the luck to be there twice is beyond belief!
I remember standing among the crowd and seeing the large group of American flags coming down the street; the sight was breathtaking.
I asked the person standing next to me, and was told that there is a flag for each first responder that perished in the terrorist attack of Sept 11, 2001. It is hard to describe how I was feeling at that moment, as I watched the fire fighters march towards me, and to see the sun illuminate the flags — a decisive moment, not just for me and my camera, but for all those around me.

Thank you for submitting this photo. I feel like there is a very genuine moment here and that’s not something that we get to capture much as non-photojournalists. Terrific story and it’s a poignant image showing the moment when that realization — what the flags symbolize — hit you. Thanks again for your submissions. I really appreciate your nice work and look forward to the Brooklyn Bridge photo you have coming up soon.
