The Southbank precinct in Brisbane is a leftover of the World Expo of 1988. It is a popular area for diners, theatre goers and people out for a stroll along the Brisbane River, with beautiful views of the city.
I was capturing the city lights on a Friday night when I saw this couple strolling toward me. They looked so happy and peaceful. I wondered what their story was. I like to create lives for the people I photograph when doing street photography.
It was a rainy night and this couple was engrossed in each other under their umbrella. I couldn’t help but snap a photo of them as they passed. The lighting and the mood and the shake from not using a tripod gave the image a look that I immediately knew would translate beautifully to black and white — one of my favourite genres of photography.
This is now one of my all-time favourite images in my portfolio and one that was pure coincidence — being in the right place at the right time. Many of the world’s most beautiful images began as creative accidents.
