Copyright Issues

First, let’s talk copyright. Upon submitting images to the Photoblog Alliance, copyright is not transferred and the photographer retains full image rights. Our site has done everything possible to prevent the theft or illegal use of images on the site. The protection of your property is of utmost concern to us and we will take the appropriate measure to ensure that your images are kept from theft. However, the protection of individual images is, ultimately, the responsibility of each collaborator. We do not recommend a large watermark through the center of the image but do recommend a mark in a corner that signifies that it is yours. A watermark in an area of the image that is difficult to clone out is one of the best ways to protect your images from illegal use.

We do not post your images to social networking sites such as twitter or facebook. We do not retain any copies of your images on personal computers or hard drives. Each image is stored in a password-protected WordPress account. At the moment, there is only one administrator for the site.

If you have issues concerning the protection of your images on our site, please email us at support@photoblogalliance.com.

Submission Guidelines

The submission guidelines for images are as follows:

Size = 960px wide

If you submit an image that is larger, we will only use a 960 px wide version. Submitting a larger image presents some issues with loading speed that we don’t want to have to deal with. So, please submit an image that is 960 px wide.

Please note that we do not want to receive images with borders. It doesn’t fit with our layout and causes some issues. Please crop all borders before submitting an image. If we receive an image with a border we will ask you to remove it and resubmit the photograph.

Weight = < 500K

We want the images to  load quickly, so there is a weight restriction on images. Please submit images as JPEG files and keep the image quality to no more than 80%. Along with the width restrictions, this should keep you well within the 500K range. If additional editing of image width is needed, the photoblog editor will inform you by email.

Subject

The subject categories are broad so that we can include as many collaborators on the site as possible. Submit an image that is representative of you and your style. Think about the style of your photography and submit images that are representative of that. Are you a niche photographer? Do you only shoot wide angle shots? Do you have a theme to your photography? Think about what you want to portray because the image(s) will be linked back to your site or blog. You want to have some continuity between what you do and what you show here.

Text / Background Info

With each submission, we believe that it’s important to also bring in the narrative behind the image. Some of the things people want to know are:

  • Why this subject?
  • Were there any technical difficulties of getting the shot? How did you solve them?
  • What do you like about the image? What made you select it?
  • Is there an emotional connection between you, the photographer, and this subject or image?
  • Does this image lead you to talk about a photographic technique?

As with the submission of images, take a look at the other posts on the site to get an idea of what you can, and should, put here. If it’s lame, the editor will let you know by email and you can follow some of his suggestions.

All images are posted at 8am CST (Central Standard Time, USA). This may mean that it is posted at the end of the day if you are in Asia or Europe.
